Service Level Definition: Walkup Computing

This page contains the service level definition (SLD) for Walkup Computing, which provides Ethernet-based network access for laptop users at various locations around campus.

Description

Walkup Computing provides authenticated access to the campus network and the Internet for portable computers. Those with laptops or handheld computers can access public Walkup Computing ports, which are conveniently located in several libraries, computer labs, and common areas around campus.

Who can use this service

University faculty, staff, and students, as well as University-sponsored guests

When the service is available for use

Supported Service Hours*:
8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday

Extended Service Hours*:
5:00 P.M. to 5:30 A.M. Monday through Friday
Weekends (excluding the Maintenance Hours listed below)

Maintenance Hours:
5:30 A.M. to 7:30 A.M. Monday through Friday
5:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Saturday
5:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Sunday

*Access to the service may be limited in some locations to the open hours of the building.

What you must have in order to use the service

  • Portable computer with a 10 mb/s network adapter configured to work on any network
  • Data cable with RJ45 connector plug (also known as a standard ethernet cable)
  • SSL-capable web browser to open initial QuickConnect authentication webpage (most recent web browser versions are capable of SSL)
  • NetID and NetID password for authentication

(Note: University-sponsored guests must request and receive a temporary VPN guest account.)
