Service Level Definition: VPN

This page contains the service level definition (SLD) for the campus VPN (Virtual Private Network) system.

Description	The UIUC Virtual Private Network is designed to provide secure communications between the UIUCnet network and client machines on networks that may not be secure, such as wireless networks or third-party Internet service providers (ISPs). Clients that use wired networks may choose to use the VPN, but are not required to do so. Clients that use the UIUCnet wireless network must use the VPN or QuickConnect in order to connect to any computer that is not on the UIUCnet Wireless network.
Who can use this service	University faculty, staff, and students, as well as University-sponsored guests.
When the service is available for use	Supported Service Hours: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday Extended Service Hours: 5:00 P.M. to 5:30 A.M. Monday through Friday Weekends (excluding the maintenance hours listed below) Maintenance Hours: 5:30 A.M. to 7:30 A.M. Monday through Friday 5:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Saturday 5:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Sunday
Where you can use the service	Anywhere UIUCnet Wireless is enabled Any campus IP address that is not part of URHnet ISPs that allow IP Security (IPSEC) traffic (Note: Most ISPs allow IPSEC traffic, but you might want to confirm this with your particular ISP.)
What you must have in order to use the service	Installed and configured VPN client NetID and NetID password (Note: University-sponsored guests must request and receive a temporary guest account.)

Cost	A subsidy provided by the Provost on behalf of the campus allows CITES to offer this service at no charge. However, Palm OS, Windows CE, and pre-Mac OS X users must purchase their software client.
