Campus Appropriate Use Policy

Description

UIUCnet is a high-speed wired and wireless network that connects almost all departmental and college buildings on campus.

Who can use this service

Campus faculty, staff, students

When the service is available for use

Supported Service Hours:*
Twenty-four hours a day, except during maintenance hours

Maintenance Hours:
5:30 A.M. to 7:30 A.M. Monday through Friday
5:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Saturday
5:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Sunday

*Supported service hours apply to the portions of the network managed by CITES.

Where you can use the service

The wired network can be used from any campus building, as well as off-campus locations via the VPN or UIUCnet Dialup. The current locations for UIUCnet Wireless are listed at http://www.cites.illinois.edu/wireless/locations.html

What you must have in order to use the service

  • For high-speed access, your computer must have an Ethernet-based network card or a wireless (802.11 a/b/g) network card. For dialup access, your computer must have a 56 K modem.
  • Some parts of the network, such as UIUCnet Wireless and Walkup Computing, require authentication with your NetID and NetID password.

Dependencies on other services

Internet Service Providers (ISPs), such as AT&T and the Illinois Century Network, that provide Internet access to the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Cost

A subsidy provided by the Provost on behalf of the campus allows CITES to offer this service at no charge.

How to request changes to this service

Units that would like this service offered in their buildings should contact the Network Design Office for more information. Individuals who would like to request changes can contact the CITES Help Desk (see above for contact information).

How to find out about changes to this service

Any changes will be announced on the CITES homepage and the CITES Status web page.
